“Art of Decipherment/Women
and Glyphs”
by
Lydia Peake
Thursday, February 21, 2008
from 7:30 – 9:00 pm
at
2957 Redwood Avenue
West Sacramento, CA
95691
Last September Roger Peake presented
the Society with an introduction to the Maya.
On February 21, 2008 Lydia Peake will be giving her lecture on the “Art
of Decipherment/Women and Glyphs”. Lydia
will extend the interpretation that Dr. Karl Taube introduced in his
presentation on the murals at the San Bartolo site in Guatemala. Lydia and
Roger have been frequent attendees at the annual Maya Meetings, which has
provided them extensive exposure to Mayan research. This has allowed Lydia the opportunity to
gather information on the decipherment of Mayan writing and given her a unique
perspective on Mayan women as portrayed in the glyphs. Don’t miss this very interesting
presentation!
The presentation will be held at the
Peake’s home at 2957 Redwood Avenue, West Sacramento from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.

Her discussion will focus on the effects from fire on diverse heritage resources including a National Register of Historic Places rock art district, the results of archaeological surveys performed because of the fires, and the site protection measures that are used during fires.
The presentation will be held at the Maidu Interpretive Center at 1960 Johnson Ranch Drive, Roseville. Plan to attend this very interesting talk. The public is welcome. Invite your friends.

"Trading Spaces:
The Economic Landscape of Precontact Central
California"
by
Charlotte Sunseri
On January 19th, our 2007 SAS scholarship winner Charlotte Sunseri, presented her research on social, political and economic reorganization in Monterey Bay to Santa Clara Valley during the Middle Period (600 B.C. - AD 1000) through the Middle Late Transition (AD 1000 - 1250). She discussed sites near present Moss Landing, Watsonville and Gilroy. She was very appreciative of the funds from Sacramento Archeological Society. The scholarship funds were used to determine that the artifacts were older than previously believed, thereby changing the theories about the use of these sites. As Charlotte finishes her research, we will hear from her again.
