Archaeological Excavation at Ft. Reading, near Anderson

Saturday, May 3, 2008

7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Join Professor Ritter, SAS member Susan Ferguson, and other archaeology students of Butte College on Saturday, May 3rd on an excavation at a historic fort location in Northern California

Established on May 26,1852, this adobe built, two-company post was located on the west side of Cow Creek, about two and a half miles from its confluence with the Sacramento River at the present town of Redding in Shasta County. Established by 1st Lieutenant Nelson H. Davis, 2nd Infantry, the post was primarily intended to protect the mining district from Indian depredations. The fort, one of the earliest posts in northern California, was named for Major Pierson B. Reading, paymaster of the California Volunteers during the Mexican war, and a pioneer settler in California. Although the garrison was withdrawn on April 1, 1856, the post was intermittently occupied until June 13, 1867, and completely abandoned on April 6,1870. The fort's buildings were sold prior to the restoration of the reservation to the public domain on February 15,1881.

It will take at least 3 hours and more one way to get to the site.  It is east of Anderson and about 10-15 miles south from the heart of Redding.  With gas prices the way they are it will take at least $40 to get up and back. Car pooling is highly recommended.

There is a lunch break so those coming should prepare a lunch.  The time there usually runs from approximately 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  It is a long day so you must be prepared to put in the time and sweat, and definitely wear old clothes. If anyone has metal detectors, please bring them.  For more details contact Susan Ferguson at 916/966-4861 or susanferguson@comcast.net.
